Fall 2018: AME599 Special Topic course, Innovative Conceptual Design for New Product Development

June 1, 2018

The AME Department has a 3-unit special topics course that might be of interest to you. A brief description is below but a full syllabus is also attached. If you’re interested in signing up, you can request D clearance through myViterbi under Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Be sure to include the section number 28900/28905 in the comment section since there are other AME special topics.

AME 599  Innovative Conceptual Design for New Product Development (No major prerequisites required)

This course teaches a systematic conceptual design framework, called Innovative Design Thinking (IDT), for designers to leverage the power of design theories to attain “ideality” from upstream while consider the requirement of design practices to maintain “practicality” from downstream during product development. Students will learn how to use propositional logics and design axioms with a systematic design process in IDT to ideate new concepts that are logically feasible, functionally simple and physically certain. These design concepts, with proper execution sequences, will have the minimal functional complexity and the maximal physical modularity, hence leading to new products that are both as ideal and practical as possible.
