For Viterbi MS, progressive MS and PhD students interested in applying engineering in healthcare contexts (CHLA, Keck Hospital and other sites), the BME 566ab two-course sequence provides direct links and hones your team skills to identify needs, create solutions and commercialize your inventions. This course is scheduled for Monday evenings in DRB 145a running from 5 to 6:30pm.
Currently the core of the joint Viterbi-Keck MS program in Healthcare Data Science, BME 566a and BME566b (2 units per semester) were created to help engineering students to “learn by doing” in areas related to medical device and process innovation. Students in these courses participate in workshops, seminars and team-based activities throughout the academic year.
All students registered in these courses become active members of inter-disciplinary teams linking clinicians and other healthcare professionals with expertise within the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, other USC schools and external institutions with mentors and/or collaborators. Students learn patient-centered research approaches required to address a variety of healthcare needs. Students participate via needs finding, concept screening, rapid prototyping, intellectual property protection, project development, planning for regulatory approval and technology transfer.
By applying design-informed approaches toward problem identification and solution prototyping, students are involved in all the steps of medical device innovation from conception to commercialization. Through external links, the courses provide an excellent foundation for interdisciplinary, boundary-spanning, inventive entrepreneurs and aspiring professionals seeking early practical experience with device and method innovation in healthcare. Past students have accelerated the advancement of their careers by joining large device companies, consulting firms, startups and earning multiple prizes in entrepreneurship competitions.
There are still spaces available in the first year of the Topics in HTE course sequence (BME 566a and BME 566b).
